Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to question certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
