The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week a study projected his energy policies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with the government.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for other people, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the aggressor; his crime policy states that when someone steals your outer garment you must offer them your pullover also.
The evident and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels calls for a type of profound affection concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by reference to the finest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to that which renders it unique and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In both situations does it suggest pretending the most damaging of both America and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both modesty and faith, a blend that genuine national faithful should embrace.
