The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.
