The highly-awaited second season of the musical adult cartoon Hazbin Hotel debuts on Prime Video this week, and fan speculation has been rampant.
The first season presents a diverse group of characters residing in the afterlife, sets them at odds with songs about their clashes, and builds tense rivalries and emotional bonds that fuel fan obsession.
The fandom's stated hopes for the new season differ greatly, but certain themes emerge over and over: Will a fan-favorite character break free from Valentino? Will we find out more about the binding agreement affecting the enigmatic Alastor? Will [favorite character] and [other character] finally get together?
"Naturally, I don't make the show with fan service as the main goal," the showrunner commented recently. "But I believe that me being a fan of my own show means there's a lot of it just inherently. I also want to see these things, and I hope some of these things to occur, and clearly some of these things are meant to happen in the show!"
She says her long-term vision is for five seasons of Hazbin Hotel. Future installments have already been green-lit by the production companies, which produce the series.
That might mean fans have to wait years for some of the major resolutions — but they could be shocked at how quickly season 2 moves, and how many of what they're anticipating unfolds now.
"I feel like people are going to get a lot out of it," she adds. "We get some firsts. I think we get some really amazing reveals, some fascinating backstories, and even just simple things, [like] I hope this character gets a song. […] Audiences will experience much more singing from the previously silent cast members."
The creator is well-informed of the theories and desires about the upcoming season — especially in the format of audience prediction charts.
"I've seen a few fans make a bingo card about the new season," she says. "Naturally I can't post it, but I've actually done some of them, and nearly every one of them have almost a bingo. I thought, Oh, if you put this [event] in this spot, it would be a bingo. So that leads me to believe we accomplish much [of what fans are waiting for in this season], because I was like, Oh, there's multiple potential bingos on this card. So that makes me happy."
Hazbin Hotel the second season launches on the streaming service on October 29.
