Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released in the coming days.
