A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
